The most popular legal question discovered on TheLaw.com by Google is one asked and answered in 2003 – What does adjudication withheld mean? Perhaps because it was asked over 10 years ago (although the answer hasn’t changed), this thread is easily the most popular one viewed on our website. We’ve been able to add several more pages that add more information since then.
I’ll have to add an additional definition to The Law Dictionary, which has a definition for adjudication but not when it has been withheld. The most comprehensive information comes from The Law Guide, which provides an entire article on different types of alternative sentencing. It’s actually called “deferred adjudication” in that article although it possesses the same meaning that the judgment in the case is temporarily being held in abeyance until such time as a particular event shall occur, e.g. the completion of a probationary period.
I just found it quite interesting that of all the information we have available on this site, TheLaw.com is apparently the source for understanding this particular legal term – for the moment.
